Ogust Residence and Vivarium

Client Richard Ogust
Date 2009
Size 1,900 sq ft
Budget $1,350,000

A building comprised of offices, residence and vivarium, 4500 sq ft, $1,350,000. Our patron, renowned naturalist Richard Ogust, dedicates his life to rescuing and researching engendered turtles. Mr. Ogust is also a devoted New Yorker and has decided to house his activities in the Lower East Side. Rather than demolishing the existing townhouse, the project expands with a steel structure on top and in the back, creating new floors for writing and research. The sections and elevations define the new programs while taking advantage of the natural ventilation and lighting opportunities on the facade and roof. The resultant design establishes a dialogue between the new and old portions, and their corresponding residential and research programs.
